Saugus tries to end skid

Saugus head football coach Jason Bornn threw out an analogy this week about his team.

It went something like this: If a car salesman worked his butt off to get a monthly bonus and at the end of the month that bonus didn’t come through, then the salesman should be satisfied with the effort put in, but still frustrated that the bonus didn’t come through.

NEWBURY PARK — Just three games into the 2009 football season, it is easy to see where the Saugus Centurions attention is focused — the Foothill League season.

After their second loss to a top-10 Northern Division team, this time a 41-21 defeat against Newbury Park Friday, the Centurions (1-2) are taking their lumps early while learning lessons for the future.

“It’s all to get us ready for league play,” said Saugus head coach Jason Bornn. “We play these teams to push us and challenge us. We know that when we hit league we will have played the toughest schedule to prepare us for league play.”

Saugus Almost Beats Itself

PASADENA — The Saugus Centurions may not have found the all the answers in a 17-7 win at Pasadena, but at least they passed their first test.

Saugus looked sloppy for the first 24 minutes, and Pasadena didn’t look much better.

“We turned the ball over way too many times,” said Saugus head coach Jason Bornn. “I think a combination of first-game jitters and we had some young guys playing in some new positions. We were just real nervous.”

In the first half, both teams combined for 12 penalties that easily cost 150 yards of progress, and Saugus survived three turnovers to take an 11-7 lead into the half.

Saugus put the first points on the board with a 32-yard field goal from Manny Padron to give the team a 3-0 lead.

Manny Padron

Saugus wide receiver/defensive back Manny Padron is OK with opening up.

It’s almost like he has to.

Because there’s curiosity in the fact that so many people have so many good things to say about the senior.

They talk about obstacles and adversity and how he gets past them like … well, like he gets past an opposing defensive back on the football field.

“God has a plan for you,” Padron says. “You might not like the way things are going. They’ll get better. He’ll have the right plan. Have faith. He’ll lead you to a better ending.”

Saugus Pushing Through Pain

Jason BornnWith four potential starters banged up after just a couple of days in pads, the question for Saugus head coach Jason Bornn is: “Do you rest them?”

Actually, Bornn said this is a time to test those players.

The seventh-year Centurions head coach said there is a major difference between a player being hurt and a player being injured.

Some players take advantage.

“The dog days of summer — I get that, but it’s the third day,” said Bornn of players not being able to handle the early pad practices.

“You’ve got to fight the illness. You’ve got to fight the aches and pains,” he said. “It’s part of playing football.”
Bornn said he is sensitive to some injuries.
